If you have writing skills - you can utilize those skills to attract inbound links to your web site.
Many sites use other peoples written material - articles or other - to offer their visitors more content. There are even sites that pretty much only use other peoples material, basing their entire site on them.
These articles are found on various sites - offered for free - for anyone to use. Authors write articles - submitting them to these sites for anyone to use. In return, they get inbound links from every page displaying the article in question.
In the article - or in the surrounding text - there will always be a link pointing to the author's web page. This is why they write and submit their articles - these links are perhaps the most useful links one can get, simply due to their high relevance.
If you write a good piece about an interesting and/or popular topic - there is a very good chance people will use it on their pages. Write two and double your chances - write as much as you can and the odds are even better. Even if your article(s) don't get published anywhere else but on the article sites originally submitted to - the links coming for them will often be worth atleast something.
Writing an article - and submitting it to the various article databases - will get you inbound links of high quality. Assuming you write articles related to your web page - the pages it is displayed on will most likely be highly relevant, thus making the links very useful.
